That depends almost entirely on the coating and on maintenance, not on the steel. Rain and humidity find any break in the finish, and once rust starts at a weld or the base it spreads underneath. A gate that gets touched up when the coating chips will outlast one that is left alone.
Because the base sits in splash water and sometimes in standing water after rain, and because the bottom rail is where dirt collects and holds moisture against the steel. It is also the part nobody inspects. Keeping the base clear and touching up chips there is the highest-value maintenance you can do.
It comes down to your driveway. A swing gate needs clear space for the leaves to open and a reasonably level surface. A sliding gate needs a clear run along the fence line for the gate to travel into. We will look at the site and tell you which one your space actually allows.
Usually yes, if the gate is built for it. Tell us at the design stage even if you are not installing a motor now, because a gate intended for automation needs adequate rigidity and the right hinge and post arrangement. Retrofitting to a gate not designed for it is possible but rarely as good.
