No, and this is worth being clear about. Tiles and grout are a wearing surface that sheds most water, but grout is porous and joints move. The waterproof layer sits underneath the tile bed. If someone tells you tiling alone will stop a leak downstairs, they are describing a repair that will not last.
Because internal corners move slightly, and grout is rigid. Grout in a corner cracks, then water gets behind the tile. Flexible sanitary silicone absorbs that movement. Grout that has cracked out of a corner is one of the most common things we are called to fix.
The floor is laid to a deliberate fall towards the floor trap, checked as we go rather than assumed. A bathroom floor that holds a puddle after every shower is a setting-out failure, and it also keeps the grout permanently wet, which is where mould starts.
We can, but it usually gives a better result to remove the fittings, tile the full surface and refit. Cutting around a screen leaves visible joints and awkward silicone lines. We will tell you which approach suits your bathroom when we look at it.
